Civic Pride

The first thing that strikes you as you drive into Walthamstow along Forest Road is the breathtaking
sight of the Town Hall and associated civic buildings. As a friend raised in East Germany commented
'Doesn't it strike you as a testament to Stalinist imperialism?' Well, he actually said it better
and with more words, but that's the best my poor memory can do. And, yes it does.
A monument to Civic Pride conceived out of the socialist idealism of the thirties, its pillars
sporting reliefs showing noble labourers and artisans nobly working. Actually, the reliefs are
really worth looking at.
The irony is that Waltham Forest is one of the most deprived regions of Britain.
16 Sep 2005, replaced the Assembly rooms with a more interesting shot, and added
a shot of nearly the entire complex.
www.art-in-public.net has gone. A great loss.

Always wanted to live in a castle, but can only afford a small victorian terrace?
No problem. These pioneering folks show the way.

There's just no excuse for some things.
This page covers the tasteless, the pointless, ugly or pompous things that spoil the environment.
Oddly enough, the most striking examples happen to be initiated by the council.
Last updated 16 Sep 2005, adding the London Waste Ecopark (sic).

A page dedicated to hand-drawn signage. This craft is dying; new signs are mostly machine made.
However, there are still a number to be found. The page includes some delightful examples spanning
a century of lettering and graphic styles.

Little of the graffiti in Walthamstow is designed to please the observer. Occasionally, though,
a work shows style or wit.
