When working on the collection of cycle photos, I was surprised by how few people actually use the cycle lanes. After all, there's an awful lot of red tarmac and paint involved. It must cost quite a bit. I hope all the oil, destruction and waste involved is offset by the amount saved by these few.
Most of the cycle lanes are marked with dashed lines, which means, if I am reading my highway code correctly, that they don't mean much. Drivers may drive or park in them if it is 'unavoidable', whatever that might mean. So their effect is intended to be psychological.
